Last night I experienced a minor case of pasty butt with one of my chicks. Luckily I was up late and while watching my new chickens I noticed one of them had dried poop on her butt (please excuse me if I am too graphic). Pasty butt is very common with chickens that are between 0 to 2 weeks old. If not taken care of quickly the chick may die. The books suggest using a washcloth or towel and wetting it with warm water. You then are supposed to wipe the dried poop of the chick with the now warm washcloth. You need to act quickly because the little chicks get cold after a while away from their heating lamp. Since chickens are new to me, this was a new experience for me. Overall it only lasted a couple of minutes. This was the poor little chick who had the pasty butt. It just so happened this chick is one of them that don't enjoy being handled as much.
